On your first conviction, you will be fined, with penalties and assesments, well over $1000 in fines and costs, and you may be required to serve 48 hours to 6 months in jail with 3 to 5 years probation. Attendance in a drug/alcohol treatment program will be required within six months of the conviction. Almost all DUI convictions will result in a mandatory minimum jail sentence. A judge can order an ignition interlocking device, which requires you to test for the presence of alcohol before the ignition will work, placed on your vehicle.

 If you are arrested on a second offense, you will have to pay the fines and the time you spend in jail will increase to 10 days to 1 year. Also, you may lose your license for up to 18 months. A judge may require attendance for over a year in an alcohol treatment program. On a second conviction, the courts will order an ignition interlock device for your car.

 On a third conviction within 7 years, the fine will increase, and you face jail for 120 days to 1 year. Your fourth conviction could be charged as a felony.

 If the DUI charge involves an injury or a fatality, you face felony charges. A felony conviction will bring you the same or higher fines, a longer license suspension, required attendance in a drug/alcohol treatment program, and a longer jail sentence.

 Here’s another shock: The above costs don’t include the cost of an attorney and other fees including court assessment fees (which can be as much as 170 percent of the original fine), raised insurance premiums, the cost of court-ordered educational programs, and vehicle impoundment. All told, even a first conviction can reach well above $3,000 in fines and penalty assessments.
